Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi knew in advance about the arrest of crime intelligence chief Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo, investigator Brian Padayachee told the Madlanga commission on Tuesday. Mkhwanazi later filed an affidavit in connection with a corruption investigation involving senior police officials, Padayachee said. The testimony was delivered during a public session of the commission.

Padayachee, an investigator with the Independent Directorate for Accountability and Coordination (Idac), gave his account as part of ongoing hearings examining misconduct within the national police leadership. He stated that Mkhwanazi’s prior knowledge of the arrest raised questions about protocol and internal coordination. According to Padayachee, Mkhwanazi expressed no objection to the timing or handling of Khumalo’s detention.

Padayachee also said he was surprised by Mkhwanazi’s public comments questioning his professional competence. “I was shocked at Mkhwanazi’s remarks about my competence,” he told the commission, as reported by The Citizen. The exchange highlights growing tensions between senior security figures and oversight investigators.

The Madlanga commission, tasked with probing corruption and abuse of office in law enforcement, continues to hear testimony from key figures in the security sector. Khumalo’s arrest is one of several cases under review, focusing on allegations of misconduct and undue influence within top police ranks.
